Goal IV: Theory and Praxis
Students have a critical grounding in theoretical perspectives that draw on research in LIS as well as other fields of knowledge, that inform their professional practices including research, organization, management, and access to information.
IV.a. Students will describe applications of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies in library and information science.
LIS6511 Collection Development/ Maintenance
This project was done as a group of three. In doing a needs assessment for a library collection it is important to analyze the data. We analyzed the quantitative data by examining the library collection statistics which gave us the areas that needed improvement. It was also key for us to analyze the qualitative data such as the demographics, faculty needs, and administrative needs. In the case of this school the knowledge that the school was being rebuilt and they would be housed in a temporary location gave us important qualitative data when it came to deciding the format for the books we wished to purchase.

IV.b. Students will identify opportunities for research and develop plans for research in applied settings in library and information science.
LIS6271 Research Methods in Library and Information Science
This research proposal was created in a group. We chose to examine the fact that lower-income schools often are understaffed in school libraries and look at the connection between the education levels of the staff in lower income schools and the quality of their programming. In choosing this topic we felt this was an area that was lacking in the research in Library and Information Sciences
